Rohan Bopanna


Rohan Bopanna (born 4 March 1980) is an Indian professional tennis player, and Indian singles number 1. Bopanna who started playing tennis at age 11 reached his career high singles rankings on 27 February 2006 when he reached the 230th position in the ATP Rankings. He reached his first ATP doubles final at the Chennai Open, paired with Prakash Amritraj, but the lost to Michal Mertinak and Petr Pala. Then in June, he faced Roger Federer at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. At the Kingfisher Airlines Open in Mumbai, he reached his second final with Mustafa Ghouse, however they were beaten by Mario Ancic and Mahesh Bhupathi

This saw him reach 107th spot in the ATP Doubles Rankings, which was a career high as well. He has played several times for the Indian Davis Cup team and also feautured at the 2007 Hopman Cup alongside Sania Mirza, where he lost his first single match, but clinched a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in the final and decisive doubles match. In their second confrontation against Croatia the same scenario happened again as Mirza won her match, Bopanna lost his single, but together they managed to defeat the Croats to end up with four points out of two matches. This result increased their chances of reaching the final with one more clash versus Spain to go. India eventually lost to Spain, which qualified for the final themselves, to lose against Russia. He paired up with Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi in the middle of 2007, nick named the 'Indo-Pak Express' they went on to win 4 Challenger titles in a row, and his double rankings moved up to a new high of 84. They reached the final of the the Kingfisher Airlines Open in Mumbai, but fell at the last hurdle to Robert Lindstedt and Jarkko Nieminen.
