India lose to Saudi Arabia 3-0
Aug 17, 2006Indian football teamís Asia Cup campaign came to an end after a 3-0 loss to Saudi Arabia in Kolkata. This despite the return of Bhaichung Bhutia to the Indian side.
Inspite of playing at home in Kolkata, Bhaichung Bhutia and India failed to make a mark in the game. The Arabs were on top of the game right through pulling off a convincing 3-0 victory, a result that has put India out of the Asia Cup qualifers. Striker Yasser Al Qahtani started the scoring in the 2nd minute and then went on to hit a hat-trick as coach Bobby Houghtonís first major competitive match ended on a losing note. India struggled against a strong Saudi team who had players from 2006 World Cup campaign.
The Indians were clearly banking on the flair and experience of captain Bhaichung Bhutia and though the striker got India close to scoring in the eighty-third minute his fans were left disappointed. The defeat to Saudi was Indiaís third straight in the tournament to languish at the bottom of the group. And the team will be hoping their record of not scoring a goal in the qualifiers will be broken when they take on Saudi Arabia in an away match in two weeks time.
